As part of a PlayStation Blog post further detailing the PSVR2 launch lineup, Sony has now confirmed the free upgrade for Gran Turismo 7 will allow you to play the full game in virtual reality. The only feature you won't be able to access whilst using PSVR2 is the two-player split-screen option, which makes sense. Besides that, "players will experience all cars and tracks in VR like never before". This includes online races too.
Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi then details how Gran Turismo 7 will take advantage of PSVR2, with players having eye tracking and foveated rendering to look forward to. The free update for current PS5 owners arrives on launch day, 22nd February 2023. Will you return to the track for Gran Turismo 7 in VR? Let us know in the comments below.

Thats the news we've been longing to hear! Bravo!
Now if only VR didnt make me ill for weeks...
Amazing. I’ll buy it for this now
Wooooo! I secretly hoped this but was kind of holding my breath and expected the worst after the disappointing GT:S for VR1.
This makes me feel a lot more excited for my VR2 preorder having a full AAA game already on hand for it.
I swear Sony's doing the customer experience thing for the PSVR2 launch better than they did for the PS5 launch. All the news keeps getting better for VR2. All the news always came with a stinging gotcha' for the PS5 launch.
I actually stopped playing the game when the VR announcement happened. The rest of the game will be 100% VR for me! Glad I picked it up Black Friday!
@Titntin Really not worth it if it does that to you...I know that feeling, and I don't ever want to experience how nauseous VR made me, ever again.
@Gamer_Guy Yes my friend, I've not been able to play since and haven't pre ordered, although one of my freinds has
10 minutes in a flying game on PSVR1 and I was sick literally for over 10 days. Couldn't walk in a straight line and had to hold myself up all the time or I would fall.
I'm devastated to miss out, I've always been at the forefront of games tech since it started (binatone tennis machine when I was 13), but I'm afraid the tech has finally gone somwhere I cant follow and that saddens me a great deal.
I'm happy for everyone else though!
This'll be amazing with the right setup
@Titntin Oof, that's nasty. I'm certainly aware of the nausea effects it has on some people but that's usually for an hour or so. That's got to be the most extreme case I've ever heard. Are you sure it wasn't coincidence of being just actually sick and it just happening to have started with the VR setting off the effects? (Not that I'd be willing to try again to test the theory after that either! I will never eat a certain microwavable hamburger again for the rest of my days after a bad episode as a kid even though I know it's not related at all.)
Did that game happen to be Ubisoft's Eagle Flight?
34 days to go!!!!
@NEStalgia Yeah it was eagle flight! I'd tried less mobile games and just experienced faint nausea and little sick, but this was something else. I've never suffered Vertigo before, but I'm pretty certain I had vertigo for all that time. I was scared it wasn't going to go.
My friend has attempted to get me playing many times since, but as you say, once you've had an experience that bad, you can never try again.
Can't afford a vr2 headset can I have a free upgrade that lets me play it offline instead 😂
@Titntin That’s sad to hear. Hopefully as the tech evolves there’ll be ways to ease people into it.
When I first tried VR I felt similar but definitely not to your extent. Even playing something like Thumper for like 30mins would make me feel woozy.
With time I got much better at it & it passed. Just being able to play Resi7VR was worth the price of entry & that’s not to mention Astrobot: Rescue Mission- the single greatest video game experience in my life.
@Titntin Sorry to hear man, that’s rough! I’d say all hope isn’t lost though and don’t feel like it’s not for you.. I see a lot of people get discouraged when they jump in, end up feeling nauseous and then completely dismiss VR as something either they can’t handle or something that needs to be “fixed to reduce nausea”. The reality is that yes some people have stronger stomachs than others but in truth VR needs to be eased into, to get your “VR legs” as they call it. And I’m not talking a few days, I’m talking weeks of playing in short bursts, starting with more stationary games and easing very slowly into games with full locomotion or extreme movements. Think of it like training your body for anything else (you wouldn’t suddenly jump into a rocket without acclimation or training and then blame the equipment for making you feel ill). The second you feel even a slight bit nauseous, stop immediately, take a long break or come back tomorrow. It’s really not the tech, but something your brain needs to get used to. I eased myself into it over a long while and there were times when I thought I’ve fully gotten my VR legs and either played too long or jumped ahead and played something like Ace Combat and felt super sick for over a day. VR is a really magical experience and I hate to see people turn away from it coz they think it’s not for them. You can do it my dude, just ease into it that’s all.
@NEStalgia
I wish I’d not played GT7 when I did. I’m fully finished with all events and trophies. Now I have to think about whether I should buy it back for the VR experience…also have a similar issue with NMS, although I still own that.
Thankfully I deliberately didn’t play RE:Village, and never got around to Pistol Whip or either of the Moss games!
@Fight_Teza_Fight
“ Astrobot: Rescue Mission- the single greatest video game experience in my life.”
Mine too, and I’ve been around a while by now! Magical game.
Huge news. Alot of people were speculating that it might just be a “VR mode” like GT Sport had, but not the full game.
Having the full game in VR is very exciting stuff.
Fantastic! Great news!!! Soooooooo excited for this!!
For anyone in the uk, if you’re quick it’s on sale at £45 on Amazon - I’ve just bought it! 😃
Great news cant wait to give this one a go in vr. Still got a few things to do so will wait until feb to go back in vr. Wasnt expecting the full game tbh what a great addition.
@Titntin I knew it!! To be fair, I loved that game and played the whole thing. Overall it was one of the cooler PSVR2 experiences. I'm not a trophy hunter so I didn't play the race challenges dozens of times until I was perfect but I played every challenge to at least a passing result.
But, even as someone that never has nausea issues with VR (I remember playing those Virtuality cabinets back in the day...that was insane the heavy gear and dozens of cables that made you feel like a Borg drone back then), and am one of the five 5 people that actually bought a Virtual Boy (still have it! I deserve my name on a plaque of recognition somewhere at Kyoto HQ I feel))....but I have to admit there were a few times while playing Eagle Flight that I felt a little woozy. Nothing like you experienced, and nothing that persisted past taking the helmet off, or really just playing the next stage, but yeah, there's definitely something about that game that's not quite vetted for successful VR experiences.... The one I heard the most horror stories about was Robinson: The Journey. That one was infamous for nausea issues, but I definitely see where, if it could throw me off at moments as a VR stoic, Eagle could really throw someone sensitive to it for a serious loop under the wrong conditions.
Some of the changes in PSVR2 have the possibility of making it more usable for you...but...yeah, I wouldn't try it again after that, I'm sure. A little discomfort, for a brief while...but 10 days immobile...nope. Still curious though in that I'm not sure I've heard of any VR reaction quite that severe...there's that part of me that wonders if it was really all the VR's fault or if that just exacerbated something else. But I don't think I could force myself to find out the answer, either
@Fight_Teza_Fight I think I remember reading that some of the nausea issues are attributed to the disconnect between what's seen, and the lack of motion feedback, and the purpose of the haptics in the visor are related to that more than any kind of entertaining functionality. IDK if that will really help many people that otherwise can't use it use it, but I think that's the idea. We'll see I guess. I suspect foveation helps too. It's really meant to help free up resources to keep visuals and fps high, but a more realistic focus (or rather less unrealistic focus) probably helps with the mind over matter physical effects somewhat.
@thefourfoldroot1 Yeah, I got kind of lucky because I stopped buying launch games now that they're $70 and wait for sales, so it just happened that I picked up GT7 on the black friday sale, played it for a while on and off, then got the news about VR, and just got to stop right there, I still have a lot of the game left to go.
I think this just killed my interest in Forza 8.....VR racing vs not VR racing. I'm not quite a waffle elitist (that's the opposite of pancake, right? ) but....yeah that's an easy one. It's almost a launch VR game.
NMS I have mixed feelings on. I actually own it on XB instead, but I never really got into it and never really played it much. Of course it's full price now with VR and will take forever to go back on sales now that VR will push it, but I have to choose if I rebuy it on PS for VR, or just skip it knowing I don't really love the game much. But it could be awesome in VR.
Moss, I played maybe half of in VR1, but the hassles of setting up and knocking down VR 1 kept me from getting back to it ever. And I never played 2, and it's worth it to see that game better presented in VR2 for sure.
I have a good launch setup. HCotM, GT7, Moss 1 & 2. A lot of other launch games look intriguing, but I'm not sure I'd plop money down on those yet...but I have a lot of content out of the box either way especially with probably 3/4 of GT7 all new to me. This is just a huge, huge plus.
And they're not even charging us a $10 upgrade
Going to be one of those gaming moments you never forget, Can’t wait
@Titntin that's exactly the boat I am in. I'm going to give it the good ole college try again, though, and try every single recommendation for preventing the sickness with PSVR2.
Edit: Oof, my sickness was never that bad. I would feel sick (felt like a raging headache, or hangover) for a good 3 or 4 hours afterwards before it finally went away. But never days at a time😫
I love vr, but couldn’t play racing games much as they made me feel sick. Think I bought driveclub vr, dirt and already had gt sport without any luck. I’m wondering if the much higher fidelity and better refresh rate on the vr2 hardware will help counter this? Hopefully!
Polyphony on fire
Will be a very hard year again for the „competition“.
Considering I have a full-on sim racing rig with cockpit, wheel & pedals, this should be a game-changing experience especially when playing Sport mode...if not for the nausea...
Just another day when I regret cancelling my PSVR2 preorder after a very short discussion with my wife about the price…
That's amazing news ,thats it I'm getting psvr2 now I feel for people who feel sick etc from vr who can't use it very much or not at all and yes it does take a gd while to get used to it completely ,the full game of gt7 in vr ,fantastic news
@Titntin bummer T! Though for some people it seems inevitable
Things you can try if you haven’t
Seasickness bracket - lightly stimulates a pressure point on the wrist known for sea sickness
Make sure the HMD is fitted well (when I first demoed VR in retrospect it was clear the person assisting me had no idea what they were doing)
Various settings within certain games can be adjusted for smoothness, turning etc
Sometimes smooth isn’t always better!
Get massage on a muscle called sternocleidomastoid (associated with muscle he ear, jaw, headaches & equilibrium issues if tight)
Don’t play poorly developed games
Move your head with your eyes
Just a few things for you or anyone to try and mitigate nausea!
As stated before
Might just be one of those things
Cheers
Shagger!
Buzzing
@Titntin
That’s rough but, honestly, some people have problems with some games but others not, and sometimes it’s just a matter of seeing what works for you.
For example, I have and love eagle flight, and had no sickness, but Here They Lie I couldn’t play for more than 30 minutes without feeling incredibly sick.
For most people, driving games and flight games with a cockpit are best, or on rails experiences with predictable movement (such as switchback for example), but it can just depend on the person.
I guess I’m just trying to say that maybe, if you get the chance on someone else’s headset, try some different types of games. It would be a shame if one experience put you off VR gaming.
@NEStalgia
That has been mentioned, but I’m not sure about the haptic placement for that function sadly, and Sony haven’t mentioned it. For anyone interested though;

I tried to hold out on GT7 but had been waiting years and eventually picked it up cheap at CEX. I also played a couple of hours of Moss but I had just come from Astro Bot and it seemed to pale, plus I had tracking issues which made some of the puzzles annoying, willing to give it another go though.
I seriously have more games than I think my stomach can take. I’ll likely be splitting my time between these VR lovelies and Ishin/Hogwarts.
What a February! Much happier than I thought I would be a few days before I hit the big 40 anyway.
Been checking the website everyday for this news. Thrilled. Preordered the headset solely for this.
Hopefully F1 2023 and ACC with support psvr2 as they do PC VR.
Can’t imagine how many hours I’m going to sink into this 🫣 but sure looking forward to it.
Just sold my PSVR, motion controllers and aim controller to help fund. Pleasantly surprised to get over £200. Good investment if you ask me.
Excellent news! I'm struggling to complete some of the GR3/4 races and getting frustrated with it. Be nice to done the VR and experience some of the earlier races again
Would be great if the social screen would display lots of race telemetry so those watching could feed it back to the driver.
@NEStalgia I wasnt completely immobile for 10 days 😁 however, I was off work for three days and when I went back I still had periods where I couldnt walk properly, like I was on a ship in a storm, hanging on to anything to stay upright. Once this had been going on over a week my wife was hassling me to seek medical attention, but it faded and went.
Given the severity of the response (Ive not really heard of anyone else as badly affected), Im naturally not eager to repeat the experience, no matter that I yearn to be able to. VR is fantastic and im missing out!
@NEStalgia
Do my eyes betray me? A positive post about a Sony product or service? Are you feeling well sir?
I kid, I am very excited about PSVR2 and glad you are too. I know you are hard to please, but so am I after all. If it can pass your bar then it's gotta be good. GT7 is a big deal for me and I seriously thought it would be very limited in terms of modes / use, so very pleasantly surprised, same as you.
The lineup is impressive and cannot wait!
Wow, this piece of news alone will carry a lot of PSVR2's weight over the launch window. I'm glad Sony is fully aware of that. I'm beyond excited.
One thing that would be super cool would be to adapt the garage so that one could walk around the vehicles or simply sit in the driver's seat to look around.
And to those who are on the fence because of discomfort, I'd reiterate the option of using these wristbands that are somehow effective at fighting nausea through vibration.
I remember when this random dude broke the world record on time spent in VR. And he did it with the aid of this Relief Band thing.
@Titntin I can't blame you, that's for sure! That's like "Ubisoft tried to kill me" level Kotaku muckracking level one-of-a-kind reaction to VR there!
@SplooshDmg I specifically was not going to mention to you the games that involve VR first person waifus..........but.......here you are....cat's outta the bag.... I deny all knowledge from this point forward.
@UnlimitedSevens LOL, I can be positive about Sony products on the rare occasion that they actually have good policies. It's not common in the dark days since Emperor Ryan took the throne. Today is a day of jubilation! They didn't gouge on the hardware (it's expensive but I feared worse given their patterns), they're being generous so far with the software (HCotM isn't $70, GT7 patch is free)....they're actually treating VR customers as customers rather than subjects. It's like rolling back to the PlayStation of 2013 like Jack Tretton and Kaz are smiling down upon us
This feels more like a real console launch than the PS5 did Definitely getting excited for this one! Between full GT7 and a dedicated Horizon game this is really an exciting VR moment.
@SplooshDmg I just hope they never make a Genshin PSVR2 port. You will eat and sleep in the visor and never come out of it.
@Titntin in case You try again, in my understanding, You should not force it, but stop immediately once You feel a tiny trace of nausea. If this works well i.e. the nausea disappears quickly, try again after a long enough pause (day), and again and again. Some people manged to condition their brain in this way from surviving a couple of minutes to enjoying full length gaming sessions. But, it does not seem to work for everybody. And of course choose the games wisely. Best are presumably higher budget, simple games in which You walk around physically and move (games like beat saber). I only got a bit of nausea while playing xing. So, I am presumably not the best source for recommending good games to get started.
This is huuuuuge!!!!
@Marquez
Feel you. Had the same discussion with my wife, however I won sort of and am still allowed to purchase a $1000 entertainment unit such as this. However from the week after, I am to support her in that for the next 20 weeks afterwards she is going every fortnight to a spa treatment, total value at the end being the same cost. So technically this unit has cost me $2000, better be worth it.
Me: Oh cool full campaign then just arcade mode only.
Me further down the article: Seriously no 2 player. Like come on they prove in Playroom VR it's possible for asymmetrical multiplayer (same with minigames on the Wii U in Nintendo land or COD split-screen on the Wii U Gamepad and TV) and they can't offer a Headset and Non-Headset player idea come on Polyphony come on Sony.
Did Sony forget they had Playlink an casual game line of games using tablets/phones to allow for dual screen/asymmetrical games. I don't remember if they did well but still.
I don't understand the 'online races' part. Streaming data for online/a VR headset is a great way to get sick and not have a consistent connection which VR needs. I question the wording in that part of the article/if a quote. If they meant something else sure but still.
If it's for 'graphical quality' online or in general to not allow split-screen I mean come on the PSVR 1 wasn't the best looking but it was still worth experiencing regardless of that because it was still fun/cool they allowed it to work regardless. It's 2 screens use them not 1 screen replicated to the other as the only way to go about it seriously I'm kind of sick of this. But then again the Switch exists because no one cases about dual screens with the Wii U. At least Samsung and Microsoft do with dual screen phones but then again they will be just productivity use cases won't get phone games doing crazy stuff I don't see it happening just side by side only sigh. How many use Remote Play for dual screens not many I can only count Playroom DLC that supported the Vita/Phone/Tablet otherwise it's mostly cast to the system the same content. I don't expect a map only experience in a VR headset with the other on the TV it's just not suitable for that kind of thing compared to the Wii U/Vita but splitscreen at least come on.
Otherwise with the game being online (same reason the branding with PSVR support in an update always confused me did they just happen to put that update version on the disk? I assume so or else would be false advertising for offline players) also and eventually it being offline I question if it will still be supported? GT PSP kills your save if you move memory cards (I know I tried). Sport had it were it's you can't save but if you get far enough into the game you can still access content that usually is blocked without progression but if you don't progress you can't access it online as the game can't and it's why it's arcade only even though if you play enough you can access all content offline just not save (prevents save file editing I assume, cheating is a pointless excuse why make it the whole game instead of multiplayer only) and GT7 I assume it's similar to Sport even though they don't explain it because they never do and I haven't tried it to find out if it's the same as Sport save server connection reasoning.
I don't like GT7 at all (Grid Legends was my racing game of the year) I think it's a mess of design decisions but PSVR2 is the only thing making it worth me not hating this game because it's a worthy addition even if I wish it was for a different GT game instead than GT7's campaign.
@Titntin exactly my issue too. Cancelled my preorder as I watched the latest previews from CES and I just know I'm going to feel ill
@Digit2021 That’s a hell of a deal for both of you, it’s definitely giving me ideas…
Def "the game" I would buy a PSVR2 for but will have to miss out until a price reduction (Kayak VR: Mirage looks gorgeous too)
@Mikey856 that's what she said
@Would_you_kindly if only…
